{"id":890,"date":"2015-08-12T21:20:31","date_gmt":"2015-08-12T21:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naima.website.member365.com\/?p=890"},"modified":"2016-09-08T21:11:11","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T21:11:11","slug":"stay-cool-in-the-summer-heat-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.naimacanada.ca\/stay-cool-in-the-summer-heat-wave\/","title":{"rendered":"Stay Cool in the Summer Heat Wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are three simple ways to keep your home\u00a0cooler in the summer without spending a fortune on air conditioning. \u00a0No\u00a0modern science here. \u00a0These are things we\u00a0know \u2013 but might have forgotten.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shade the windows:<\/strong>\u00a0Indoor blinds are nowhere near as efficient at keeping the heat out as using an external awning or shutters. \u00a0Once the heat gets through the window, it will stay in the house. \u00a0You need only target the windows facing the sun.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insulate the attic:<\/strong>\u00a0\u2026but not during a heat wave! \u00a0Wait for a few cooler days when the attic is cool, and start the job in the early morning. \u00a0This is a simple DIY project. \u00a0Bonus: winter heating costs will also go down.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ventilate the attic:<\/strong>\u00a0The air in your attic heats up, and up, and up. \u00a0A thermostatically controlled fan can expel this heat much faster than natural attic ventilation can. \u00a0In my first home, which had no air conditioning, I added an attic fan. \u00a0As a result, the temperature dropped by 5\u00b0C. \u00a0(Buy a quiet one!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are three simple ways to keep your home\u00a0cooler in the summer without spending a fortune on air conditioning. \u00a0No\u00a0modern science here. \u00a0These are things we\u00a0know \u2013 but might have forgotten.
